KARLIEN ERASMUS

Karlien has been in private practice since 2000. She opened her practice soon after completing her Master’s degree, Her then soon to be husband joined her at her rooms after completing his Masters internship and after getting married started working from their property in Hatfield for around 13 years before moving to Lynnwood Manor.  Karlien obtained her BA, BA Honours (Psychology), Masters (Counselling Psychology) and PhD in Psychology at the University of Pretoria. She completed two additional years of part time study in Law at UNISA as part of an LLB degree.

Her internship was completed at Stabilis Clinic for alcohol and drug rehabilitation. The title of her PhD thesis was  “Family processes and coping strategies of families of adolescents diagnosed with epilepsy”.

In 2020, Karlien moved to live and work in Dubai  with her family for 6 months, where after she joined Habit Health in Auckland New Zealand at the beginning of 2021 and qualified as a full service provider at the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) working on Psychological Services-, Pain management-, Concussion Services- and Training-for-Independence contracts. She also started a private practice in Auckland New Zealand towards the end of 2021 and associates with East Auckland Psychology.

Karlien has a keen interest in Medical- and Health Psychology and has extensive experience working with clients referred by medical specialists. Through her involvement in the medical and health psychology field, as well as long involvement in Neuro- and Spinal rehabilitation, she has a good understanding of the dynamics of such conditions and works with an array of healthcare professionals to treat the effects of amongst others Chronic illness, Stroke, Epilepsy and Mild traumatic brain injury. Her predominant theoretical preference is the systemic approach while she provides therapy to individuals, families, groups, couples and also includes meaningful others and family members where appropriate.

Karlien is a regular guest on local radio talk shows and over the years have been invited to provide input to local and international popular and medical related magazines, including SARIE, Rooi Rose, LIG, LIFE magazine.

Apart from painting and her creative handwork hobbies, Karlien passed a grade 8 Royal Schools of Music and UNISA examination in piano and obtained a Performance Certificate from Trinity College. She loves music, joined a music band during 2021 –playing the piano/keyboard or acoustic guitar and is busy learning to play the bass guitar. She is also a little adventurous, and enjoyed completing 2 internationally accredited keelboat sailing courses together with Johan at Yachting New Zealand at Bucklands Beach Yacht club during 2021 and 2022.

JOHAN ERASMUS


Johan has been in private practice since 2001. He obtained his BA and BA Honours (Psychology) at the University of Pretoria and his Masters in Clinical Psychology at the University of North West. He completed an additional year of full time study in Medical Applied Psychology at the University of Pretoria. His internship was completed at Bophelong Psychiatric Hospital, IPELEGENG Child and Family Centre and at Middelburg Therapy private psychology practice.

Johan joined his (then soon-to-be wife) Karlien at her rooms in the capital city in 2001. After getting married in 2002, Johan and Karlien started working from their property in Hatfield for around 13 years before moving to Lynnwood Manor in 2014.

In 2020, Johan accepted a job offer at Emirates Airlines as a Human Factor Specialist, and moved with his family to Dubai for 6 months. Being the holder of a Commercial Pilots License and a Flight Instructors on fixed wing aircraft, Johan also has a keen interest in Aviation Psychology and Human Factors in aviation. He is an associate member of the European Association of Aviation Psychology (EAAP), member of Aero-Medical International (AMI) and served on the Aviation Medical Committee of the South African Civil Aviation Authority for two terms.
Johan joined Habit Health in Auckland New Zealand at the beginning of 2021 as a senior clinical psychologist and qualified as a full service provider at the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) working on Psychological Services-, Pain management-, Concussion Services-, Training-for-Independence contracts and Mental Injury assessments. He also started a private practice in Auckland New Zealand towards the middle of 2022 and associates with East Auckland Psychology. He is a registered psychologist at the Health Professions Council in South Africa as well as with the New Zealand Board of Psychology. He is a full member at New Zealand Psychology Society.
Johan has a keen interest in Medical- and Health Psychology and has extensive experience working with clients referred by medical specialists. Through his involvement in the medical and health psychology field he has a good understanding of the dynamics of such conditions and works with an array of healthcare professionals to treat the effects of amongst others Chronic illness, Mild traumatic brain injury, Patients being admitted in Intensive Care Units, pre- and post-operative therapeutic support and Mental Health challenges. Johan has long involvement in Spinal rehabilitation, Head-and-Neck Forum/Head-and-neck Cancers, Intensive Care Unit academic ward round and consulting with patients admitted in ICU, therapeutic pre- and post surgery care to patients receiving Bariatric Surgery, and treating in-patients at Psychiatric hospitals alongside psychiatrists with whom he has longstanding professional relationships with.

His focus in therapy is a mix of therapeutic methods with the goal of addressing the identified issue or problem to resolve it as far as possible. In the practice he has a big scope of expertise and has had exposure to many different settings, challenges, and therapeutic challenges.
Over the years Johan has been invited to deliver presentations at different medical related conferences including Spinal-, Head-and-Neck-, Urology- and ICU conferences. He is also a regular guest on local radio talk shows.

He loves the outdoors and various sporting activities. He enjoys doing charter flights and volunteered at the air wing of Coast Guard New Zealand. He also enjoyed completing 2 internationally accredited keelboat sailing courses together with Karlien at Yachting New Zealand at Bucklands Beach Yacht club during 2021 and 2022.
